Textbooks
Essentials of General Surgery, by Lawrence (published by Williams and Wilkins) specifically addresses our objectives. You can obtain this paperback text for about $50.00.
Because you will see a lot of medical problems, you should own the Washington Manual or its equivalent.
The following list of books is also highly recommended:
- Essentials of Surgery, Sabiston (ed.)
- Current Surgical Diagnosis and Treatment, Way
- Trauma, Mattox
- Acute Abdomen, Copes
Copes' Acute Abdomen is a medical classic and should be required reading for all 3rd year students. It is short, "sweet," and inexpensive. It will serve you well the remainder of your professional life if you read and understand it now.
If you decide that surgery is for you, when you go into practice you will need a surgical reference text. We recommend that you obtain one of the following:
- Textbook of Surgery by Sabiston (ed.)
- Principles of Surgery by Schwartz
- Surgery - Scientific Principles and Practice by Greenfield et al.
Schwartz is more detailed in pathophysiology whereas Sabiston is more procedurally oriented. Greenfield presents cutting-edge science in surgery and completely new writing rather than updated and revised material. Take a close look before you buy.
Additional Resources/Reading that may be of interest:
