Frequently Asked Questions
Can I
choose my site?
Sites
are assigned on a first come, first
serve basis. Anytime after you have registerd for the elective,
email
Anna Nonis to let her know your choice of site. She will do her best
to accommodate you, although there are no guarantees!
Where do I
park?
- Harborview parking is obtained in Room 1EH-117. The parking
office opens at 7AM. Call 731-3254 if you have questions
regarding HMC parking.
- UWMC parking is in the E12 lots north of Husky stadium. Overnight
parking is obtained in a set of six (about $21) for the weekday nights
the student is on call. For more information visit UW Commuter Services website.
- Parking is free at the VA and at Providence.
Will I be
supplied with a pager?
No.
But they are very handy when you are on a clinical rotation.
Perhaps now is the time to consider investing in a pager. (Exception:
students doing 686 can borrow a pager from the Plastic Surgery Division
for a $50 deposit).
Do I have to
work on holidays?
Seniors
should expect to work on holidays and weekends. However,
this is a site driven decision. Check with your site for details.

What if I
get sick?
Email
Anna Nonis
ASAP and she will let your director and team know.
What do I need to know
about hospital
privileges?
Hospital
privileges take several weeks to obtain in hospitals away
from Seattle. The documents may include a criminal background check,
immunization records, a letter of good standing from the SOM, malpractice
insurance. Documentation is easy to do if not rushed for time. Start
early by contacting Anna Nonis for help.
What if I
need special accommodations for pregnancy,
learning impairment, physical impairment?
These
arrangements are made by A300. Please contact Anna Nonis as far in
advance as possible so she can help.
I finished my clerkship a
long time ago and I haven't received a
grade. What should I do?
Contact
Anna Nonis
for help. Grades must be processed by Anna before they go to the
Dean's office. Professors and students must not give grades
directly to the Dean.
What are my chances of
being accepted into the UW Surgery Residency Program?
The
Department has a highly ranked residency and does not favor the UW
student over the stiff national competition. However, DO apply; DO take
a summer quarter surgery elective; and be sure to have a frank discussion
with your faculty advisor. Check out our Applicant Website for more information.
