Visiting Medical Students

Thank you for your interest in the Department of Surgery at the University of Washington!

Admissions for visiting students are done through the online system VSAS and are processed by the UW School of Medicine’s Dean’s office. The system typically opens around the beginning of May. Rotation descriptions, application materials and the UW School of Medicine’s academic calendar are only available through VSAS.  We are not able to shift start/end rotation dates outside of the already scheduled rotations put out by the School.

Rotation positions are filled first by the UW students then by visitors. Please ensure you apply for all courses AND rotations you are available. Visiting students may take only ONE elective within our department.

Historically, the summer and fall rotations are the most popular. The key is to submit your application as early as possible because we fill vacancies based on the approved application date stamp determined by the Dean's office.

If have questions regarding the application process, please email the UW Visiting Student Office at

NOTE: in accordance with federal law all persons having access to patient related material must complete a formal HIPAA training module. Once you have been accepted to the UW, you will be contacted with the details of this training. Contact the visiting student desk for more information.

We look forward to working with you!
