What procedure is usually done? Indications for emergent surgery include free perforation, inability to drain an abscess percutaneously, or obstruction. The procedure usually done is a Hartman's procedure with sigmoid resection and proximal colostomy and creation of Hartman's pouch. Sigmoid colectomy with primary anastomosis may be performed in selected patients.
