DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
13.) What are the indications for emergent surgery? What procedure is usually done?

Indications for emergent surgery include free perforation, inability to drain an abscess percutaneously, or obstruction. The procedure usually done is a Hartman's procedure with sigmoid resection and proximal colostomy and creation of Hartman's pouch. Sigmoid colectomy with primary anastomosis may be performed in selected patients.
