COLORECTAL DISEASE
Case #4 -
A 62 year old with LLQ pain

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
4.) How would you define a diverticulum? What is the difference between a true and a false diverticulum? Which of these is the variety found in the colon?

Diverticulum is defined as an abnormal sac or pouch protruding from the wall of a hollow organ such as the colon. In a true diverticulum, the pouch is composed of all layers of the bowel wall. In a false diverticulum, the pouch lacks a portion of the bowel wall and most often has only mucosa and submucosa in the diverticulum. In the colon, false diverticula may be present.
