Legal Externs

UW TechTransfer’s Digital Ventures group is an ideal environment to gain experience in a wide variety of legal issues as they relate to protecting the public's interest and licensing innovations created at the University. Past externs have worked on questions in the following areas:

  • Copyright
  • Privacy
  • Right of publicity
  • Confidentiality
  • Federal regulations on contracting and grant obligations
  • Contracts (licensing, employment agreements, consulting agreements)
  • Securities
  • Trademarks
  • Patents

Externs are expected to spend most of their time in the Digital Ventures office interacting with the extern supervisor, other professionals in the office, and University of Washington (UW) researchers/developers. Digital Ventures allows a maximum of two externs per quarter. Externs are expected to take at least eight externship credits per quarter in order to have enough time to understand the intellectual property management arena and to make a substantial contribution.

The time commitment required for this externship generally makes it more suitable for the summer; however, Digital Ventures encourages individuals who have the time to enroll for 8-15 extern credits during the normal school term to apply as well. Interested students do not need to have a science background to apply. Prior coursework in contracts, copyright, or administrative law is recommended.
