Research & Collaboration Agreement Process

Steps for University Investigators

  1. If you wish to transfer residual human biological materials to a For-profit entity for the purpose of a research collaboration, please submit an e-mail request to the Director of Regulatory Guidance (mcorn@u.washington.edu). Please include the following information in your e-mail:
    • Type and amount of materials to be transferred
    • A detailed description of the proposed collaborative
    • Name and contact information of researcher at the For-profit entity

  2. Once the Director of Regulatory Guidance approves the collaboration, please forward the director's approval to the Agreements Group for the Agreement to be drafted. Concurrently please contact the Human Subjects Division to determine what paper work needs to be submitted for a modification of your original IRB approval.

  3. Please provide a copy of the IRB approval to the person negotiating your MTA once you receive it from the Human Subjects Division. Invention Licensing will sign off on the MTA once we have received a copy of the IRB approval.

Steps for Invention Licensing Agreements Group

  1. Once the School of Medicine approval is obtained from the Director of Regulatory Guidance and Invention Licensing has all the necessary information (as mentioned in Steps for University Investigators), Invention Licensing will draft the Agreement and send it to the receiving party for their review. Invention Licensing will draft the Agreement once we have heard from the Director of Regulatory Guidance.

  2. If there are any problems or concerns with the Agreement we will continue to negotiate with the receiving party until agreement is reached. Invention Licensing will keep the UW Principal Investigator (PI) apprised of the negotiation process.

  3. Once agreement has been reached with the receiving party and IRB approval has been obtained (and Invention Licensing has a copy of the approval), Invention Licensing will sign the Agreement and route it on to the receiving party and the UW investigator for signature. Once a fully signed original of the agreement has been received, a copy will be provided to UW investigator along with acknowledgement that materials may now be sent.

For any questions regarding MTA procedures, please contact the Agreements Group.
