If you are a UW researcher/employee and you would like to report an innovation to our office please follow one of the steps below based on the nature of your discovery:

What is technology transfer?

Most technology transfer from universities occurs in traditional ways: teaching, publication, and other forms of information dissemination such as consulting and training of students. The formal technology transfer process captures intellectual output from UW research and attaches appropriate intellectual property rights so that UW inventions, copyrighted works and technical information may be licensed to companies or used directly by the public. Companies can then use the UW innovation or invest resources necessary to commercialize the innovation. The end result is that UW innovations become new goods and services and benefit the public.

The technology commercialization process at UW:

  1. The technology transfer process begins when a researcher discloses an innovation (invention or discovery) to UW TechTransfer.
  2. The researcher meets with a technology manager to help assess the innovation’s commercial viability and patentability.
  3. If the innovation is determined to be commercially viable, UW TechTransfer may seek to protect the innovation through a patent.  Note:  Not all technologies meet the criteria for patentability.
  4. When a suitable licensee is found, the IP rights to the technology are licensed through a commercialization agreement.
  5. The licensee further develops and commercializes the technology, creating goods and services for the public.
