As a researcher it is important to understand the value of intellectual property you create. UW TechTransfer is your resource to help you understand the market potential of your intellectual property and provide guidance on how to consolidate the rights and develop a plan for managing commercialization and external access to your innovation.
Managing the intellectual property created from your research requires thoughtful planning consistent with your research goals and assessing who will be the best partner(s) for bringing your innovation into broadest use.
UW TechTransfer has many IP tools you can use to license and share your innovation. We help you determine the appropriate ways to document and establish the Intellectual Property related to an innovation. We may employ any, or all, of these tools in the course of commercializing or sharing an innovation with external parties: confidentiality agreements; Participation Agreements that aggregate IP rights within UW; by obtaining a patent, trademark or registering the copyright, and negotiating licenses and startup agreements.
When to Contact TechTransfer
Because managing IP can take many paths, it is important to engage with our department as early as possible to discuss your innovation.
- Prior to public disclosure of your innovation and prior to the close out of your federally or externally funded research projects.
- At the start of a research project so we can help to identify possible paths and hurdles related to Intellectual Property, help in the consolidation of rights, and start planning early for future commercialization or external access.
Keep us informed as your plans and technologies evolve. We can help you identify problems in advance and find solutions related to managing the rights.
