Outgoing MTAs (Not-for-Profit)

Anytime a UW researcher plans to send materials to a researcher outside of the UW, a Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) must be in place to transfer the materials.

Steps for UW Researchers

  1. Send an email request to Agreements Group with a) a brief description of the materials, b) the name and email address of the researcher requesting the materials, and c) the name of the not-for-profit institution with which he or she is affiliated.

Additionally, please let us know a) where the materials originated, b) the funding source that led to the development, c) if there has been a recent publication, and d) whether or not the materials will be formally disclosed to UW TechTransfer via a Record of Invention (“ROI”) form.

  2. We will then draft the agreement and send it via email attachment to the receiving party. We will copy the UW Principal Investigator (“PI”) on all email correspondence.

UW is a signatory to the Uniform Biological Materials Transfer Agreement (UBMTA), and uses the UBMTA Implementing Letter (see template below) to transfer materials to other UBMTA signatories.
To determine if the party wishing to receive UW materials is also a signatory to the UBMTA, review the signatories list posted on the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) website. If the receiving party is not a signatory to the UBMTA, then UW uses its standard outgoing MTA template.

Please note: Any modifications made to the MTA templates provided below must be approved by the Agreements Group.

Steps for Outside Parties Requesting Materials

  1. Please contact the UW PI directly to request the materials. We can not process any requests without authorization from the UW PI.

  2. Please note that some biological materials may be part of a UW licensing portfolio and may not be available under a standard MTA template.
Read this section before downloading one of the material-specific MTA templates listed at the bottom of this page. For certain UW labs which receive a large number of requests for materials, the Agreements Group uses material-specific MTA templates. Parties outside UW wishing to obtain UW research materials, and who know the name of the UW lab, may use the list below to determine whether a special MTA template is available for that particular lab.

Please note: Any modifications made to the MTA templates provided below must be approved by the Agreements Group.

 Material-specific MTA templates:

  • Kavanagh Lab: Anti-GCL Antisera ( Word )
  • UW CFAR HIV Specimen Repository (Word )
  • Werner Syndrome Registry (Word )
  • Wilson Lab: Reagent & Transgenic Mice (Word )
  • Lernmark Lab: GAD - pThGAD65 (Word )

For all other material transfers, UW uses the standard MTA templates listed above.
