The M.Ed. Portfolio, with its curriculum
examples and reflections, comprises the majority of data in
this web. To a great extent, creating an on-line portfolio
and web mirrors aspects of teaching.

WELCOME to
my culminating project for the University of Washington
Teacher Education Program (TEP)! This on-line portfolio
contains unit and lesson plans, assignments, assessment
tools, memos, letters, personal reflections, and student
work. Each portfolio entry addresses my achievement of
essential knowledge and skills defined by TEP goals and
targets. As a whole the portfolio illustrates my dedication
to continuing growth in the teaching profession.

Students make connections when teachers help them link prior
knowledge with current and future studies. In developing this
web, I tapped skills and knowledge gained from five years in
the medical software field.

When planning units and lessons, I was told to "get in
the mind of the students." The ability to think like a
student helps teachers plan appropriately, providing students
with maximum opportunities to experience powerful learning.
Even before I started composing web content, I spent hours
planning menu heirarchy and page layout "in the mind of
a user."

Not all students are the same; curriculum must be designed to
meet the needs of diverse learners. To relate data to a
diverse audience, this web utilizes pictures, graphics, and
simple text.

While some students make conceptual leaps, others prefer to
move at a more deliberate pace, attending to all details
along the way. In the portfolio, hyperlinks allow visitors to
skip through information to arrive at a specific location of
interest.

Research has shown that a greater opportunity for learning
exists in a classroom where connections are made to student
lives. In my own classroom, this included learning about
fallacies of reasoning through an episode of "The
Simpsons." In this web, I provide connections to other
sites of interest to both educators and students via
hyperlinks, expanding boundaries of knowledge.

Although a relatively small number of students is in the
classroom at any one time, educators must be aware that
influences stretch beyond the classroom to administrators,
parents, and the school community. This site was designed to
meet the needs of a diverse, public audience by providing a
logical layout and useful range of data.

One of the responsibilities of an educator is to help
students reach new levels of growth, socially, academically,
and personally. This web was created to fulfill personal
goals aimed at growing as a professional educator. I
encourage you to browse through the portfolio, and hope that
you may grow while sharing in my experiences.
Exerpt from
the reflection on my full time student teaching experience,
Fall 1997
I set eight concrete goals for this past quarter, and met
six. The remaining two appear now at the top of this new
list, a list of goals to take me through completion of the
TEP program and into the world of substitute teaching.
- Collaborate with one non-English teacher on
developing a unit or unit component
- Contact at least one parent/guardian per two-week
period to relate a positive message
- Develop a thematic series of web pages to fulfill
the portfolio component of the TEP program
- Gain knowledge and perspective about a number of
districts through actively seeking substitute
positions.
