Research Funding Opportunities

Funds to Support Research in Tobacco Related Health Disparities
The WA State Department of Health (DOH), in collaboration with the UW Tobacco Studies Program, the School of Social Work and the Department of Psychology, announces a grant competition for research projects in the area of tobacco prevention. The primary focus of this particular call is on the use of tobacco by groups disadvantaged because of their socioeconomic position, race or ethnicity, disability, their geographic location, sexual orientation and gender identity or age. The WA State DOH has put forth $50,000 for research on tobacco related health disparities this year. Funded projects will generate papers that will be presented at WA State's Annual Tobacco Prevention and Control Conference in the Fall of 2008.

The goals of this competition are to bring together scholars at the UW interested in areas of health disparities and tobacco use to generate additional scientific and policy-relevant findings, to facilitate future collaborations including NIH proposal submissions, and provide feedback to the WA State Department of Health about possible needs for program changes.

We will hold a session on November 8, 2007 from 3-5pm at the University of Washington Health Sciences Building in room H-670, where DOH program staff researchers will discuss this call for proposals and provide additional details about future program's funding priorities. UW faculty will give an overview of some of the existing datasets available for research on tobacco related disparities. Primary data collection projects will be considered within these strict budgetary limits.

Criteria for Selection

Proposals will be chosen based on thematic relevance, significance, innovation, feasibility and strength of research design.

Eligibility

Pre-doctoral and postdoctoral applicants are encouraged to apply. People with a doctorate from an accredited institution must have an appointment as faculty, research scientist, professor, investigator, or postdoctoral fellow at UW. Predoctoral students must be a graduate student in good standing at UW on a research track who can demonstrate in their application appropriate supervision by their current research mentor at UW.

Funding

Projects are supported for one year. Expenses may include salary support for investigators.

How to Apply

To apply for funding, please send a proposal (no more than 3 pages of narrative text) that describes the rationale, specific aims, and research design. The data source that will be used in the study should be clearly described. The proposal should include a timeline and simple budget.

Please send proposals to Karin Riggs at kriggs@u.washington.edu no later than December 15, 2007. A review committee will evaluate the proposals, and its decisions will be announced by January 15, 2008. Anticipated start date for the grants is February 2008.
