Site Maintenance in FrontPage 2002

FrontPage 2002 includes some useful features for easy maintenance of your site. This tutorial will cover two of these features: Reports and Replace. (FrontPage 2000 users see Site Maintenance in FrontPage 2000.)

Reports
Reports allow you to see all kinds of problems with the site such as broken links, outdated pages, slow-loading pages, etc.

1. Select View / Reports / Site Summary to switch to the Site Summary view.

Site Summary

You see listed all of the various names to choose from with a Count, Size and Description.

2. Double-click one of these names for further details.

3. Double-clicking a file will give different results depending on the report. Normally, a file will open when double-clicked. If it is a broken hyperlink, for example, the Edit Hyperlink dialog box will appear.

Edit Hyperlink

If you click the Edit Page button, the file will be opened that contains the broken hyperlink. Under Replace hyperlink with you can enter a correct address for the hyperlink, or browse to one by clicking the Browse button. If you select Change in all pages, this hyperlink will be changed to the now specified one in all occurrences. If you select Change in selected pages, the hyperlink will only be changed in the pages you have selected. Click Replace to correct the hyperlink.

Replace
The Replace feature allows you to easily find and replace anything on your site.

1. Select Replace from the Edit menu.

Replac... Ctrl+H

The Replace dialog box appears.

Find & Replace

2. After Find what, enter the text that you are searching for to replace. After Replace with, enter the text that you would like to replace the old text with. Under Search options and Find Where, select All pages to search through the entire site or Selected page(s) to search only through the page(s) you've selected. Under Options, select Match case if you want the search to be case sensitive. Select Find whole word only if you do will not accept incomplete matches (whitespace, for example). Select Find in HTML if you want the search to be through the HTML source rather than the document itself.

3. Now that you've entered criteria for a search, you can proceed in different ways. If you click the Find in Web button the search will halt when it makes the first match. At that point, you can then select the Replace button if you want to replace the match. If you select the Replace All button FrontPage will find and replace all matches automatically.
