Making a Navigation Bar with FrontPage 2000
A navigation bar contains links to the major sections of a website. It appears on each page, providing an easy way to "navigate" through a website. Microsoft FrontPage 2000 offers multiple ways to create a navigation bar for your site. (FrontPage 2002 users see this page.) Using tables is a more manual approach, giving you more control over the layout.
Preparing the Buttons
Before inserting a navigation bar, you need to make the buttons it will contain. You will need a button for each link.
Inserting the Navigation Bar
This is the manual approach to creating a navigation bar, so do not use the Navigation Bar command from under the Insert menu. Instead, choose Insert, then Table from under the Table menu. The Insert Table dialog box appears, as shown below.
Choose settings under Size appropriate to what you would like the navigation to look like on your page. With 1 row and 5 columns, as in the example above, the navigation bar will be laid out horizontally. If you want the navigation bar to be laid out vertically, choose 1 column and the same number of rows as there are buttons. The suggested Layout options shown above may be changed to your liking. Click OK and the table appears on your page.
Click inside the first cell. Choose Picture, then From File from under the Insert menu. Locate the button for the first cell and click OK to insert it. Do this for every cell until the navigation bar is complete.
If the navigation bar doesn't fill up the pixel width of the table, you can click and drag on the cell dividers to adjust it to a tighter fit. Next, click on the first button and select Properties from the Format menu. The Picture Properties dialog box appears, as shown below.
Underneath the heading Default hyperlink and after Location, enter the address that you would like the button to link to. Click OK. Do the same for each button in the navigation bar. The navigation bar is now complete, and you may add it to each of your pages. Each time, make sure to change the links on the buttons so they are relative to the page.
Your completed navigation bar should look similar to the example below.
