Inserting Sound with Microsoft FrontPage 2002
This page provides instructions for inserting sound clips into a Microsoft FrontPage 2002 Web page. Sound clips should only be used to enhance your Web page, so avoid using sounds that distract Web users from your site's purpose. Never use sound as the only way to communicate. Not all browsers, platforms or computers support sound, and not all users will be able to experience the sounds you include.
This tutorial will assume that your computer is set up to play sound. To record your own sound, see our page on Capturing Audio with Sound Recorder.
If you need a sound clip to follow along with this tutorial, download the three below, all of which are very small files that will load quickly. Right-click on a link below (Mac users hold the Control key and click) and select "Save Target As." Browse to an appropriate folder on your computer or network and then save the file.
Creating a Link to a Sound File
Linking to a sound file is one of the easiest ways to provide sound on your Web page.
1. Save a sound file into the same folder as your Web page.
2. Open up a new or existing Web page in Microsoft FrontPage 2002.
3. Save the page into your website's folder with an appropriate file name (music.html for example).
4. Type in some text to serve as the link.
5. Highlight the text, right-click (Mac users hold the Control key and click) and select Hyperlink... The Insert Hyperlink dialog box opens.

6. Browse to the sound file and click OK. You will need to upload both the sound file and the Web page to a Web server.
Inserting Microsoft Sound Clips
A number of sound clips are available from Microsoft as part of Office XP Clip Art and Media.
1. Open up a new or existing Web page in Microsoft FrontPage 2002.
2. Save the page into your website's folder with an appropriate file name (music.html for example).
3. From the Insert menu, select Picture and then Clip Art. The Insert Clip Art heading will appear on the right side of the screen.
4. Under Search In, select where FrontPage should search for clip art. The Office 2002 Media CD may be needed to access some sounds.
5. Under Results should be, check Sounds and uncheck the other boxes.
6. Enter in a search term and click Search.
7. Click on a clip to insert it and a picture icon appears on the page.

8. Double-click on the picture icon to set the sound properties. Set how many times the sound should repeat (loop) and the loop delay. Decide whether the sound will play automatically or on mouse over and click OK.

9. Go to the File menu and select Save.
10. The Save Embedded Files dialog box opens. Rename the file and click OK to save it in the same folder as your Web page. You will need to upload both the sound file and the Web page to a Web server.

Inserting Background Sounds
Background sound play the moment a Web page loads. You can cause this sound to loop, but beware that many Web users find this annoying. Since music usually lasts much longer than sound effects, use a small file format for music such as a .mid file.
The Microsoft FrontPage Help menu gives the following instructions for inserting background sounds:
1. In Page view, right-click the page, and then click Page Properties on the shortcut menu.
2. On the General tab, under Background sound, in the Location box, type the sound file you want to play, or click Browse to locate the file.
3. Do one of the following:
- To play the sound continuously, select the Forever check box.
- To play the sound a fixed number of times, clear the Forever check box, and enter the number of times you want the sound to play in the Loop box.
When a site visitor opens a page, the sound is played.
Note: This feature is not supported by all Web browsers.
