WebDAV Instructions for Mac Users

WebDAV allows you to upload to a Web server by dragging by connecting through the Finder. Once you've uploaded your Web pages to a server, others will be able to access them via the Internet. You will need Internet Explorer 5.0 or later to use WebDAV. Please direct any questions about the uploading process to the TQ help desk after logging in at http://www.etrio.org/. Instructions below are for the Mac OS X operating system.

1. Open the Finder. Finder

2. Select the Go menu and choose Connect to Server.

3. Enter the Server Address as follows and then click on the Connect button:

http://www.etrio.org/TTQ#####/

where "#####" is the numeric team ID.

Connect to Server

NOTE: To access your team's username and password, log into http://www.etrio.org/, click on My Activities and then TRIO ThinkQuest. Click on the name of your team to go to the Team Information page and note your team username and password.

4. Enter the team username and password information in the pop-up window. Leave the Remember my password box UNCHECKED to protect the security of your site and click OK.

WebDAV

Note: When the username or password is copied and pasted, an extra space may be unintentionally copied at the end of the username or password. With this extra character, the server will not recognize the username or password. To avoid this common problem, type in the username and password directly.

5. The wait can be substantial as the Mac OS builds the remote share connection. In a few seconds to a few minutes, you should see the contents of the remote directory (in this case, your public_html folder on the server with the default files and folders open in a new window).

At this point, you can use this window like any other window. You can drag and drop to it, and delete, move, copy, open, and save files directly to it.

6. Minimize the window.

Open up your root folder in another window. You may now drag and drop, or copy and paste files and folders onto the server.

To upload the entire Web site:
With the root folder open, go to the Edit menu and choose Select All. This should select all your files and folders. Go to the Edit menu and select Copy.

Now go back to the window with the server files. Go to the Edit menu and select Paste.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT OMIT THIS STEP!
7. When finished, close both windows and log off the computer so that others will not be able to change or delete your files on the TTQ server. Unless you close all windows AND log off the computer, the next person to use the computer can alter or delete your entire site without needing your password!

8. Make sure to visit your site after you are finished uploading and organizing your site. It is best to do this from a computer other than the one used to create it. Check for broken links, missing image files, and other errors. If needed, revise your Web site and upload again.

Check your site in both Internet Explorer and Firefox if possible. If you can, we also recommend you look at it on both a Mac and a PC.

Viewing a TRIO ThinkQuest Web site:
TRIO ThinkQuest sites may be viewed by typing the following address into your Web browser:

http://www.etrio.org/username/

All TTQ sites will be password protected. Enter in your team username and password to view your site. After the final round of judging, the password protection will be removed from the finalist sites.

Internal pages can be viewed by browsing to them directly
e.g. http://www.etrio.org/username/webpage.html

Teams must name their homepage file index.html to ensure the homepage appears when Web users type in http://www.etrio.org/username/
