WebDAV Instructions for PC Users

WebDAV allows you to upload to a Web server by connecting through My Network Places. Once you've uploaded your Web pages to a server, others will be able to access them via the Internet. You will need Internet Explorer 5.0 or later to use WebDAV. Please direct any questions about the uploading process to the TQ help desk after logging in at http://www.etrio.org/. The instructions below will not work for Windows Vista machines. Please see our page on WebDAV Instructions for Windows Vista.

1. Open My Network Places on your desktop or from the Start menu.

2. Click on Add a Network Place in the Network Task sidebar.

3. The Add Network Place Wizard starts. Click Next.

4. Select Choose another network location in the text box and click Next.

5. Enter the Internet or Network Address as follows:

http://www.etrio.org:80/TTQ#####

where "#####" is the numeric team ID.

NOTE: To access your team's username and password, log into http://www.etrio.org/, click on My Activities and then TRIO ThinkQuest. Click on the name of your team to go to the Team Information page and note your team username and password.

You MUST type the http:// prefix and the :80 following the first part of the Web address! For example, team TTQ00000 would enter in http://www.etrio.org:80/TTQ00000

6. Enter the team username and password information in the pop-up window. Leave the Remember my password box UNCHECKED to protect the security of your site and click OK. Two things happen: (a) the Wizard advances to the next page, and (b) a second username/password dialog box pops up. Re-enter the team username and password information in the second dialog box.

Enter in your username and password.

Note: When the username or password is copied and pasted, an extra space may be unintentionally copied at the end of the username or password. With this extra character, the server will not recognize the username or password. To avoid this common problem, type in the username and password directly.

7. Enter in a name for the new Network place, or select the offered default and click Next.

8. The wait can be substantial as Windows builds the remote share connection. In a few seconds to a few minutes, you should see the contents of the remote directory (in this case, your public_html folder on the server with the default files and folders open in a Windows Explorer window).

At this point, you can use this window like any other Windows Explorer window. You can drag and drop to it, and delete, move, copy, open, and save files directly to it.

9. Minimize the Windows Explorer window. Within Windows, open up your root folder in another window. You may now drag and drop, or copy and paste files and folders onto the server.

To upload the entire Web site:
With the root folder open, go to the Edit menu and choose Select All. This should select all your files and folders. Go to the Edit menu and select Copy.

Now go back to the Explorer window with the server files. Go to the Edit menu and select Paste.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT OMIT THIS STEP!
10. When finished, close both windows and log off the computer so that others will not be able to change or delete your files on the TTQ server. Unless you close all windows AND log off Windows, the next person to use the computer can alter or delete your entire site without needing your password!

11. Make sure to visit your site after you are finished uploading and organizing your site. It is best to do this from a computer other than the one used to create it. Check for broken links, missing image files, and other errors. If needed, revise your Web site and upload again.

Check your site in both Internet Explorer and Firefox if possible. If you can, we also recommend you look at it on both a Mac and a PC.

Viewing a TRIO ThinkQuest Web site:
TRIO ThinkQuest sites may be viewed by typing the following address into your Web browser:

http://www.etrio.org/username/

All TTQ sites will be password protected. Enter in your team username and password to view your site. After the final round of judging, the password protection will be removed from the finalist sites.

Internal pages can be viewed by browsing to them directly
e.g. http://www.etrio.org/username/webpage.html

Teams must name their homepage file index.html to ensure the homepage appears when Web users type in http://www.etrio.org/username/
