Student Services
Academic Counseling
We have two advisors ready to meet the academic planning needs of program participants. Our advisors will meet with students as often as necessary to help plan classes each quarter, assist with choosing a major and to devise an academic plan for completion of a baccalaureate degree at the University of Washington.
Financial Aid Counseling
SSS advisors will assist students with understanding their financial aid award, the FAFSA renewal process, and will emphasize the importance of maintaining documentation and good communication with the UW's Office of Student Financial Aid.
Personal Counseling
We know that coming to the University is a big transition. For some students, this is the first time away from home; for others, juggling the responsibilities of college life can be overwhelming at times. SSS counselors are here to help students become acclimated to and meet the challenges of the university environment. We also recommend the valuable workshops and other important services offered by the Student Counseling Center.
Career Counseling
SSS advisors will help you select an appropriate major based on your career choices. In addition to that, SSS counselors are certified to interpret 2 online career assessment tools.
1) The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality inventory. It not only helps people better understand their own personality and learning style, but can give college students more information about compatible careers and major options. Students may also discover important clues to the way they interact with friends and family members. The MBTI will give students more insights about how you can work better with others.
2) The Strong Interest Inventory (SII) will compare the student's interests with people working in a wide variety of career areas. Comparisons are made with individuals who are satisfied with their jobs and took this same inventory. The results will help students identify career areas they appear to have strong preferences for. It will also help them identify fields that they have little interest in and may want to avoid. It is designed to be one starting point in the career search process.
Please contact your counselor for a brief meeting and to receive the username and password for one or both of these assessments.
If you are in the process of creating or updating your résumé, there are some excellent examples in the following guide from the Claremont McKenna College Career Services CenterGraduate/Professional School Counseling
Many students choose careers that require work beyond the undergraduate degree. SSS counselors will provide these students with information about graduate programs and help them prepare for the admissions process.
Instructional Support
UW/SSS students have access to full- time English and Mathematics instructors. These staff members are housed in the OMA/D Instructional Center (IC). In addition to English and Math, students may receive help in a variety of academic disciplines at the IC. Check out the link below!
Grant Aid
Beginning in 2001, our program, and other SSS programs across the country were offered funding from the U.S. Department of Education to assist students with demonstrated financial need complete degrees without accruing large amounts of debt. The grants are designed to replace or partially replace Stafford and Perkins loans, unmet need, and, in some cases, work-study awards.
