Steve holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education, has taught undergraduate and graduate courses, and has mentored student research at the college level. In addition to publishing articles focused on college students’ developing senses of self (i.e., who we think we are, and who we think we can become), his poetry has also appeared in the journals Academic Exchange Extra, Multicultural Education, and the Journal of Critical Inquiry into Curriculum and Instruction, respectively, as well as in the book, Becoming multicultural educator Personal journey toward professional agency.

Aaron Olson, B.A.
Aaron Olson comes to Seattle from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Aaron is a first generation college student and the second person in his family to graduate from an institution of higher learning. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Mexico in 2006 with a double major in Political Science and American Studies. As an undergraduate student, Aaron was inspired by philosophy, political theory, and the study of popular culture. He intends to continue his education towards a Master’s degree at the UW and later to attend law school. He enjoys writing and is currently working on several projects that he hopes to publish someday. His other interests include Capoiera, vegetarianism, club culture, music, political activism, skateboarding, and serial dramas on television.
Aaron has worked in postsecondary education for over a decade. During this time he has worked as both a member of student government and as a staff member. He also worked for the University of California, San Francisco and the Centers for Disease Control as a Small Groups Coordinator where he participated in the creation of a community center to assist at-risk populations with their health education needs. He has been very active in his community throughout his lifetime and was awarded a Congressional Award of Merit in 1995 for his service efforts. Shautzie Shieh, M.S.
Shautzie was born in Taiwan. She received her B.S. degree in Psychology from National Taiwan University and M.S. degree in Counseling and College Student Personnel Work from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She worked with the King County Department of Youth Services and Asian Counseling and Referral Services before joining the Student Support Services program. She enjoys working with college students from diverse backgrounds, has extensive experience helping them achieve academic success in various disciplines and cares a great deal about students’ personal development at the University. Ann Vu Loveridge, M.Ed.

Ann was born in Vietnam, graduated from high school in Olympia and entered the University of Washington to pursue her Bachelors degree. She joined Student Support Services as a student in 2001 and went on to graduate with her B.A. in Art in 2003. Ann continued her education pursuing her Master's degree at Western Washington University and now holds an M. Ed. in Adult Education. She joined the SSS staff in May of 2005. Ann has integrated her personal experience as a low-income first generation college student with her knowledge of adult education, and is able to help students on a more personal and professional level. Leah Spence, Ph.D.
Leah grew up in the high deserts of New Mexico where she lived for 20 years. She took her Master’s Degree in English at the University of New Mexico and subsequently moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington and complete a Ph.D. in English. Leah has worked with SSS students off and on since 1982! She was a writing tutor for the UNM SSS program while she was an undergraduate; she taught SSS students when she was a graduate teaching assistant both at UNM and here at the UW, and she has been the UW SSS Writing Specialist since 1997.
