Proceedings from the 2007 Tumor Vaccine Group Open House

We had a great time at our first ever Tumor Vaccine Group Open House, and we would like to thank everyone who managed to make it out to South Lake Union (Kudos on navigating through all the construction and finding parking as well!). It was a real pleasure to share our research and our goals with family, friends, and colleagues. From patients to doctors to advocates to scientists to tax-payers, we are all helping to make cancer research possible.

Even though Dr. Nora Disis could not make it to the Open House, it's a testament to her abilities to teach and inspire and lead that everyone was able to pull together and present our work to the public.

The speakers were:
  • Dr. Lupe Salazar, An Overview of Cancer Immunology

  • Dr. Hailing Lu, Cancer Diagnostics and Biomarkers

  • Dr. Vy Phan Lai, Adoptive T-Cell Therapy

Panel discussion on clinical trials:

Dr. Salazar, Dr. Andrew Coveler, Dr. Lu, Dr. Lai, Jennifer Childs, Doreen Higgins, and as moderator Dr. Kathy Tietje

Tours of the lab were facilitated by Dr. Lai, Dr. Lu, Emily Larson, and other members of the group. A big thank you to everyone in the Tumor Vaccine Group, because the Open House was truly a 100% group effort.

Community advocates who were present included representatives from Bastyr University, the Cierra Sisters, the Washington State Ovarian and Breast Cancer Alliance, the Wellness Company, and the Breast Cancer Fund.

We look forward to next year's event, which we hope will be bigger and better and easier to get to. If you have any comments or suggestions for the 2008 Open House, please send us an email at tumorvac@u.washington.edu or call us at 206-543-8557.
