3rd Annual Tumor Vaccine Group Open House - November 5, 2009 |
| ~ Controlling Cancer With the Immune System ~ |
| On a blustery November evening, the Tumor Vaccine Group (TVG) hosted its Third Annual Open House at the University of Washington South Lake Union research campus. This year’s Open House theme was “Controlling cancer with the immune system,” and the evening’s events focused on sharing the TVG’s pursuit of this goal with the public. TVG scientists displayed their research posters in the main foyer, giving attendees the opportunity to discuss the TVG’s most recent findings. Our attendees also had the chance to meet with local advocacy groups, including Gilda’s Club, the IBC Foundation, Breast & Ovarian Cancer Alliance, the Marsha Rivkin Center, and Team Survivor Northwest. One of the night’s big hits was the laboratory tour, where attendees heard about how a scientific discovery is ultimately translated into a vaccine. Following the tours, Drs. Kathy Tietje, Hailing Lu, and Lupe Salazar delivered a capstone presentation of the TVG’s current research. Finally, to wrap up the evening, a panel discussion with TVG researchers and research participants addressed what it takes to run and participate in a clinical trial. The Open House provided an excellent forum to talk with TVG researchers regarding immunotherapy development, cancer diagnostics, clinical trials, and our continued efforts to fight cancer through immune therapies. Wonderful food and drink were provided by QFC, Mokas, Daniel’s Catering, McCormick & Schmick’s, Trader Joe’s, Racha Thai, and Athena. Thank you to all those who attended and volunteered their time for our Open House; we look forward to opening our doors again in the fall of 2010! |
