Dr. Disis to Head New Institute of Translational Health Science

NIH has awarded $62 million in total funding to a new Institute of Translational Health Sciences led by Principal Investigator Mary L. "Nora" Disis, M.D.

"As a part of this national consortium, the institute will be able to foster new health science interactions across the sites through technology, education and research support efforts," Disis said. "Not only will our partner institutions and network sites here in the Northwest help us accelerate health sciences research, but we'll be able to leverage expertise and resources across the CTSA institutions nationwide to provide new treatments more quickly and efficiently to patients."

Mentored student wins 1st place in Research at Biotech Expo

Revathi Murthy, a 12th grade student at the International Community School in Kirkland, WA, recently won 1st place in the Research division of the 2007 NWABR Student Biotech Expo for her work, "Measuring the efficacy of organic bacteriocides against E. coli MM294." In her evaluation of various organic synthetic substances, she found that hydrogen peroxide (1%, 2%, or 3%), calcium hypochlorite (6%), and a combination of 40% acetic acid/3% hydrogen peroxide were all effective against E. coli mm294.

TTVG Research Scientist Vy Phan Lai acted as a mentor. Congratulation to Revathi, and we are very proud of Vy for contributing to research education and for fostering the development of future researchers in the community. Of Revathi, Vy says, "She was a bright and independent student, and able to generate her own conclusions about the research."

The mission of the Northwest Association for Biomedical Research Student Biotech Expo is to engage high school students in new creative ways to demonstrate what they know and are able to do within the disciplines of biotechnology and biomedicine. Please click here to learn more about the program.
