Exploring 3D Navigation: Combining Speed-coupled Flying with Orbiting
This paper, from Microsoft researchers, present a series of navigation techniques
for 3D virtual environments. The authors try to catalog them in a task oriented
manner and then describe a new technique coupling controlling movement speed
to camera height and tilt.
Tan et al. broke the 3D navigation task into 3 different subtask: Exploration,
Search and Inspection. They tested users into different navigation settings
and concluded that their new navigation technique was overall performing better
than others for the 3 mentioned subtasks.
Some general observations on 3D virtual environments are also part of the paper's
introduction and can be valuable for interactive 3D world designers.
