CURRENT PROJECTS

My name is Jamela, which in Arabic means “beautiful angel”. I am seventeen years old and I will be going to the twelfth grade in the fall nineteen-ninety seven. I've been the Upward Bound program for two years now, and I've loved and appreciated every minute of it Upward Bound has opened my eyes to a whole world of opportunities and how to go about taking advantage of them. I appreciate Upward Bound most for making it possible for students who you would think wouldn't be caught dead in a college atmosphere, actually preparing for college entrance. Thanks Upward Bound !

FAVORITE WEB SITE

For the short time that I've viewed the WWW, I've run across several interesting sites. Out of all the sites I saw, I really enjoyed looking at the Afrikan Art at sylvan@community.net. The piece that I looked at was called “street scene”. It was a beautiful oil painting of a long street with tall apartment buildings on each side of the street. There were a few kids in the street playing with the fire hydrants, spraying each other. To me, the scene reminded me of what young poor black children do when they are bored.

BIOGRAPHY

I'm seventeen years old and I work in a grocery store about twenty hours a week. I am a very outgoing, well rounded person. I'm also very active in both my community as well as school. Just recently, I was nominated out of twenty - something students to attend a National Leadership Conference, held in Washington D.C. I didn't know what to expect at this conference, I assumed I would be

surrounded by a bunch of “preppy” kids that were whizzes in math. And science. Once I arrived there, I was truly surprised. I saw a very diverse group of kids who dressed in the same type of clothing I might wear and with the same form of speech as my own. The whole trip was an experience, I'll never forget. I met and bonded with young leaders from all over the United States who were Black, White, Indian, Hispanic and everything else in between.

HOBBIES

My hobbies are considered somewhat odd to some people. Even though I am very much a people person, I really enjoy being by myself a lot, doing things like playing in my hair, or trying on clothes, or just simply thinking . When I'm alone, I also like to clean up while listening to R&B, which is what a lot of people consider to be sort of odd. When I feel like being around others, I like to skate, bike-ride, and jog in the sun. For my free time, I go to the movies with friends or over their house to do pretty much the same thing I can do at home, just with company. I'm can be really silly at times, and my friends are just like me, so when we go someplace, we usually have a good time together.

I am very much interested in Afrikan Art and sculptures.
