Review:

Few games has been written more about, before its release, than Quake. Not too strange, considering it's from the same people that created Doom.

Quake... When you hear this title, what do you expect? Probably something extraordinary. My guess is that you'll be disappointed the first time you try the game. At first, it doesn't look that impressive. It certainly looks better than Doom, but compared to Duke Nukem 3D, which is the natural game to compare with, the latter actually looks better.Second, at first Quake seems much like any other Doom clone. Well, the above were my first reactions to Quake. I soon changed my mind, though. It does look impressive, you only have to play a little first to notice. The default video mode is low resolution VGA (320x200).Fortunately, that can be changed! Bring down the console (type ~), which is nothing but a command line interface, and type vid_mode to see which mode you've chosen. Probably it's 1. Type e.g. vid_mode 7 to make it look much better. Now, everything looks gorgeous!

The scenery looks real. Brick walls, wooden bridges etc. Look up, and if you're at the first level you'll see skies that look like real skies. This creates a unique atmosphere, that no other game offer. But wait, there's more! Monsters, yes monsters. Ever played Alone in the Dark? Add some texture mapping, and voila, there you have the baddies in Quake. There are a wide range of enemies, everything from dogs to ninjas. I was particularly impressed by the dogs. Their barfing and snarling sound real. All of the monsters are well animated.

Of course, Quake has all the goodies you expect from a game like this: a few cool weapons (especially the axe is nice), multi-player modes etc.Well, I missed the level of details one finds in Duke Nukem 3D. Duke Nukem 3D impressed me and I enjoyed it a lot. So was my Quake experience. Which is the better? Duke Nukem 3D has more details, but Quake looks better and has better monsters. In fact they're twodifferent games. Try and enjoy both.
