COLLEGE PREP
Instructor: Leny Valerio
| Students
simulate a Senior student's year where focus is on applying and selecting a college or
university after graduation. Student will prepare academic resumes so that
discussion could focus on the student's need to be involved in many school and community
activities as well as show time management skills via balancing academic, employment,
extra-curricular, household duties. Students will also conduct a college search by
comparing data such as college entrance criteria, costs, graduation requirements, and
financial aid packages. They write admission offices for literature and prepare for
college application essays. Students write on "generic topics" such as
career goals and reasons for pursuing college education as well as prepare for the
specific essay topics of the colleges they plan to attend. This class also supports the essay writing skills introduced by Language Arts teachers during the summer. Prewriting and brainstorming are stressed as preludes to writing; students will also practice with thesis statement, topic sentences, specific details, sentence transitions and connections. Business letter format, style, and composition will also be explored. While applying these rules, students will write actual letters to college admission counselors, scholarship foundations, and financial aid administrators.
