Thoughts On Upward Bound
What is it like being around high school students vs. college students?
High school students aren't as panicked as college students; mainly because the reality of college hasn't hit them yet. But that's what we're here for.
How did you get involved in Upward Bound and why?
I originally coordinated one of UW UB's first portable Computer Labs. We set up "dinosaur" computers in an IC room and I was an IC Writing Center Tutor who was looking for work. Deirdre Raynor (of whom I worked with at the time) referred me to UB on campus.
What is your fondest memory in Upward Bound so far?
There isn't any "one" fond memory. There are a lot of collective memories of students who have gone through hard times like losing an only parent, facing grave illness, or having little confidence in a future for college. It has been rewarding to see these same students find hope, confidence, courage, and/or faith to persevere and keep moving towards their dreams--even if it is many years down the line!
How do you motivate yourself at work?
Wow, self motivation! I motivate myself by motivating others! It's strange how that works...I also never forgot where I came from and that there are many others far worse off than I who has overcome great odds to be at peace with themselves and their community accomplishments.
Besides working for UB, what are some of your hobbies?
Outside of UB work I have done Mom and Grandma stuff, Graduate school stuff, Buddhist stuff, jewelry & art stuff, garage sale hopping, and have managed and published a student Literary Journal for UW Bothell Campus the last five years.
If you were an Upward Bound student, how helpful would it have been for your college career?
Nothing would have helped me. I was overwhelmed and crazy at the time!
