Thoughts On Upward Bound

What is it like being around high school students vs. college students?

The energy level is much, much different.  High school students are still "full of themselves", happy, and optimistic.  Unlike college students, high school students have not learned to be afraid, very afraid.

How did you get involved in Upward Bound and why?

I was referred to Karen Morell by a colleague in 1990 and I have been hooked since then.

What is your fondest memory in Upward Bound so far?

All the Awards Ceremonies have made me a little misty and very proud.   The fondest memory of all is the UB Book Club (during the academic year of 1997-1998) which met monthly at my house and once at Leny's.  There was much laughter, talk, and reorganization of my bookshelves!

How do you motivate yourself at work?

Usually it takes little motivation because I like my job. But when I find that I'm tired or a little apathetic it is the fear of disappointing my students and/or my colleagues that keeps me going.  A "racehorse" (a triple espresso) in the morning can also get the body and mind going!

Besides working for UB, what are some of your hobbies?

Reading, Reading, Reading!  Also, sitting by the water and READING. In addition, I love to cook for friends and family and occasionally schmooze over a micro brew or two.

If you were an Upward Bound student, how helpful would it have been for your college career?

Man oh, man, what wouldn't it have helped? I had little self-esteem when it came to academics and UB would have helped tremendously in that area. If I had UB in high school, I probably wouldn't have waited ten years to go to college.
