Astronomy

instructor: Andrew West

In Andrew's section, students are learning about astronomical hazards, which is any naturally occurring hazard that has its origin outside the boundaries of the Earth and can affect life in a negative way.  The class will focus on three certain hazards: asteroids, comets, and meteors.  Students will learn how each one of these hazards affects the universe and they will get a chance to make comets.  They will also learn the importance of studying the solar system.

What are you teaching?

I am teaching a short course on astronomical hazards.

Why do you like teaching your subject?

I love teaching about all aspects of astronomy because I think it is a wonderful field that a lot of the public is interested in but really does not know a lot about.  I love to bring people to a level of understanding and get them excited about the universe and start asking questions.

How long have you been teaching?

I have been teaching for about three years.

Why is it significant to teach at Upward Bound?

For me it is important because I have the chance to give back to society for the great opportunities that I have had.  I had parents who required that I go to college which was very fortunate for me.  I want to let kids know that they too can and should go to college if they have the smallest desire to do so.  I think this program can build the confidence that students need to both go to and succeed in college.

What is so different about the students or what do you like about the students?

So far I like the students a lot.  They are sacrificing their summers to further their education and expand their horizons.  I have entertained very thoughtful questions and am impressed with the general enthusiasm of the entire group.  As for different, I don't feel the students are that different from other high school kids I have worked with or even first year college students.
