Meteorology

instructor: Dave Wolczyk

In Dave's section, students are learning about meteorological hazards.  The class will focus on the basics of weather, thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and drought.  Students will get to play hazard jeopardy, make lightning, and make mini-tornadoes.

What are you teaching?

I am doing the section on meteorological hazards.  We will discuss the basics of weather and then move on to thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and drought.  In the section classes, we will review the lecture material and do a number of weather-related exercises.  Students will get to play hazard jeopardy, make lightning, and even make mini-tornadoes.

Why do you like teaching your subject?

I think it's interesting and important to understand the natural forces that effect our lives everyday.  It's especially important for me, since I do a lot of mountain climbing where understanding the weather can literally be a matter of life and death.

How long have you been teaching?

I have been teaching for about 10 years, including 4 years with Upward Bound in Chicago and almost 4 years with the UW Upward Bound.

Why is it so significant to teach at Upward Bound?

Upward Bound allows us to offer top-notch services, the kind you might only get at expensive private schools, to students who might not normally get them.  It's very rewarding to work hard with people who really appreciate it.

What is so different about the students or what do you like about the students?

Upward Bound students have chosen to be here, and are truly interested in learning.  They are very curious, and willing to make their own education happen.  It makes such a difference to work with students who are working hard to succeed.
