1.
What were the main objectives/goals for the class?
I have three main goals for
this class. They are as follows:
A.) Help students to explore
their experiences in math and help them to gain
confidence.
B.)
Review and strengthen algebra Skills.
C.)
See an application of mathematics in engineering through a
bike unit.
2.
What are your expectations from the students?
I
expect them to participate in class, to do their best to learn
and support
each
other, complete daily assignments and projects.
3.
Briefly describe the structure of the class? What tactics do
you use to
teach
the material? Are there any special projects or activities?
We
do a lot of interactive work with the class as a whole and with
small groups.
In
addition there is time for individual practice. We also try
to mix it up by
spending
time outside of the classroom, and for two weeks we will be
working on
a
hands-on bicycle engineering unit that was featured in PRISM,
a national
engineering magazine.
4.
How does this class help prepare the students for college?
It
develops team work, critical thinking skills and builds a firm
algebra
foundation.
5.
Describe the overall participation in the classroom?
There
are many different ways that students can participate. They
work by
themselves,
with a partner and in larger groups. Students do some writing
and
self-evaluation.
They have one individual project and one group project. We
also
have tests and quizzes to provide feedback on student understanding.
