COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This class is designed to increase students' comprehension of academic English vocabulary through the study of Latin and Greek word elements as they are currently used in the English language. The course work will involve a combination of the memorization of ancient word elements and modern English terms, as well as a daily usage of these latter terms in student writing. Students in this class will benefit not only through an immediate increase in their vocabulary, but also through a greater accustomation to using a dictionary and an enhanced ability to analyze and recognize complex and unfamiliar terms. As a complement to the students' daily linguistic work, the course will also include numerous lectures and discussions of Greek and Roman culture in order to stimulate student interest in historical studies of the ancient Mediterranean world and increase their understanding of many common, yet ancient, elements of modern culture.
