Astronomical Hazards
Instructor: Andrew West

There are two goals in this section. The first is to help students digest the lecture material and find ways to take more effective notes in the lecture environment. The second goal of this section is to familiarize the students with the layout and structure of our solar system. They will gain a better understanding of our place in the universe as well as comprehend the scope of the hazards discussed in the lecture. Aside from reviewing lecture material, note taking skills, and how to take exams, the students will come face to face with actual astronmical material. They will get to study meteorites from the University of Washingtons's meteorite collection and build a comet from raw materials. These projects will aid in their understanding of the lecture material and give them first hand experience with extraterrestrial materials.

We asked three of the students what they thought of his class this summer:

Tanisha, Cleveland 2005:

I liked his slides, and didn't like listening to him talk. My favorite thing was the interesting pictures he showed us. I learned that meteors are shooting stars, and meteorites are astronomical objects that have fallen to earth and actually hit the ground. I would tell incoming students to take good notes.

Joseph, Franklin 2004:

I liked going to the planetarium, but i didnt like taking the tests. My favorite thing we did was make a comet. One thing I learned was that peoples Astrological signs are not what they think they are. I would tell anyone going to take Andrews class "Just pay attention."
