1. What is your favorite quote? What is your interpretation for this quote?

Good dreams don't come cheap.
You've got to pay for them.
If you just dream while you're asleep
Then there's no way for them
To come alive
To survive.....
- Harry Chapin

Interpretation: Dreams have to be woven with waking actions to have power.

2. What college, you are attending or have attended? What is best or worst about the college?

I did my undergraduate work in Biology at Reed College in Portland Oregon.
Best: Scary smart super intense people
Worst: So intense people sorta forgot about the "outside" world

I also spent a summer studying Molecular Evolution at Washington University
in St. Louis.
Best: Great research opportunities
Worst: Stuck at the med school away from the rest of campus

I did my graduate work in Evolutionary Genetics at the University of
Chicago.
Best: Being surrounded by the top people in your field
Worst: Kind of a sink-or-swim place- hard place to be an Undergrad

3. What is your plan in the next 5 or 10 years from now?

I'll probably stay in the Northwest. I'd like to spend more time developing
cool science activities and reaching people that are getting left behind by
science and technology. You know, dispelling myths and all that stuff. I
want to get back into photography, climb hundred's of mountains, and ski
down from the summits of all the cascade volcanoes.

4. What do you think of Upward Bound students?

Bright, inquisitive, and full of surprises. It's fun to run into students
who are brighter than you are!

5. If you got all the power in the whole world, what would you change about Upward Bound? Alternatively, if not. Then what would you change about the United State as a resident.

More money, of course! Less red tape from DC (of course). More ability to
travel with students, especially overseas. More ability to have students
sink their teeth into a single problem and experience all its facets.
