Upward Bound Bridge Program
Bridge
is a metaphor for the idea that we all need transitions –none of us
can go from A to Z in one step –we learn through a gradual level of
awareness and the transition from high school to college is a big one.
Bridge is a transition pathway from high school to college life.
Bridge also lets students carry the community of support they created in Upward
Bound on the college level. In Bridge students learn about the variety of skills
needed to survive in college and find reflection in discussion and in exercises
designed to facilitate academic success.
Since students are also taking other university courses with Bridge, they are
also able to plan study tactics together. Ultimately Bridge is a place for students
to feel safe, to ask any question and feel
comfortable while acclimating to the challenges of university culture.
The students in the Bridge program share several words about their expirience.

1.
It is such a great opportunity to take bridge classes because
you get to experience being a college student in a smaller setting.
2. It prepares you for how rigorous midterms and finals are.
3. It even helps you to manage your time with all the studying and extra curricular activities that you have to do.
4. With all the stress and all the studying you have to do, I recommend
going to the IMA, since your paying for it in your Financial Aid, just
to relieve the stress and to take your mind off classes for a time.
5. Overall, it is just a great way to get your brain moving into the college life!

Being a bridge student
is great because I can fully utilize all UB resources and the UW resources
as well. Coming into the bridge program has helped "bridge" the
gap between high school and college. Along with the general study class,
I have aquired a lot of information and resources that can be used everyday
in my studies and in my life. I encourage the bridge program for its subtleties
and refining of students.

It's hard
(and still is) to be the only (ever) UB bridge student to take chemistry
during my first quarter at UW, but this was a decision I had made
before I started college and it has become something that I have had to
endure this summer. Though I haven't regretted the decision. I've learned
so much about the subject and about myself as well. With general
studies to help aid me with advice and strategies to succeed in college,
I have learned many ways of covering new material and also studying for
a midterm exam. More importantly, I've learned that I will always
need to be around high-spirited folks who keep me feeling hopeful. The
presences of others who are happy with what they're doing in their
lives and who appreciate one another is precious to me and keeps
me from getting too wrapped up in myself and that darn chemistry I'm taking
this summer.

Bridge is a great program to introduce a university
environment. It's different than high school and even community college.
The bridge program offers smaller classes during the summer to allow
an easier transition. I like that it works like this. I think that
the Bridge program should continue because of the benefits it gives to
a student. I like the training and preparation in bridge.

Being
a bridge student is pretty unique. With the bridge program, I won't be
rushed into the fall quarter. Taking the summer quarter helps a great deal
because we're slowly transitioned into college. We aren't really expected
to be completely ready, yet we are shown what is expected of us in fall
quarter. Classes are not hard but it’s a great preview of what classes
are going to be like. Most of the classes are also a lot smaller because
its summer and everything is a bit more relaxed.

So
far the bridge summer has gone pretty well and really fast. It's really
nice having your UB friends with you this summer for one last time. We
laughed a lot and it's nice not having to start college all alone. I will
definitely miss all of them in the fall quarter but right now, I'm just
trying to survive college one day at a time.

Being
in UW UB Bridge is giving me a good look of what college is going to be
like in the fall. It is very helpful. Being with my other fellow UB students
makes me feel less alone in this big campus. However, I don't like waking
up early to go to class in the morning or not eating before class started.
Overall, I am having fun in the Bridge Program.

Summer Bridge is
fun; it really gives me a mini inside look into college life. It is a good
way to explore the campus without having the hundreds and hundreds of students
rushing by you. It is also a good way for me to try different kinds of
note taking techniques, listening techniques, basically "paying attention" techniques
to get me through really long lectures: coffee, good night sleep, good
people, a good seat and good food seemed to work for me.

As an Upward Bound Bridge student my experience has been positive but at the same time stressful. In the beginning, I had difficulties in grasping the material from the Chicano Studies class. I felt like the course was something that I did not want to study but I actually enjoyed the class towards the end. I was skeptic about taking summer quarter because I needed a break from school. Although, I believe that if I was not taking summer quarter I would have been sitting around at home doing nothing. Summer quarter has benefited my college experience.

As a Bridge student,
I realized that it was a good start to my summer. Although I don't get
to start my summer until August, so far it has benefitted me in a good
way. The bridge program has exposed me to new things and to
advice from others that I probably won't be able to experience in the fall.
I also get a head start on my studying habits and figure out what works
out for me and what doesn't. I learn new things everyday that I know will
be useful in the fall. I get exposed to new teachers and new tactics that
I've never thought of using before. Also, the bridge program has helped
me figure out more time management skills and helped me realize what my
first priorities are.

I think
the Bridge Program in the summer is useful. It helps you see how it’s going
to be like in the fall but in a smaller classroom. If you're out going,
you can meet new people before the fall quarter starts which helps a lot.
The Program also helps with certain issues you might have during
college, like time managment and study habits. Also helps with midterm/final
exam strategies. Overall the Upward Bound UW Bridge Program is good for
you and will help in the future.

UW Summer Bridge has
been very exciting for me. Like Upward Bound courses during previous summers,
I have access to many resources provided by Upward Bound teachers and advisors.
The environment was very cheery and welcoming because most of the students
in the class are also from Upward Bound. There is a lot of guidance throughout
the summer quarter, which will help when fall quarter arrives. In Donna's
General Studies 101 course, we learn effective note taking and reading
skills, which has been very beneficial. All the information gained in this
class will also help make future courses less intimidating. THANKS DONNA!

I think
Summer Bridge is EXTREMELY helpful. It gives you the experience of being
in college without the extreme difficulty of it. It's a really good transition
from high school to college. I know that if I were to start Fall Quarter
having not done Bridge, I would be so confused and lost and stressed out.
I would be so intimidated by just about everything about college that I
would just lose it. I was so close to not doing this either, so I'm really
glad I changed my mind in the end.
