Instructor: Frank (Hutchinson 154)

Costume design is one of the new elective classes offered this summer from 2:30 to 3:30. In this class students learn to use literature to create visual representations of characters and ideas. This six week course includes the studying the basics of visual design: what different color, volume, shape, and line. They are also learning how to do historical research, how to analyze a theatrical script, and how to draw a figure. The students are reading from a variety of sources including scripts, poems, and classical mythology. Frank loves seeing the finished projects from the students. "They make some amazing stuff." The ultimate goal is for the students to gain an understanding of how a costume designer works. By doing this the students learn how to analyze literature in a visual way, how to find and use historical research, and how to express abstract ideas aesthetically.
