Instructor: Leny Valerio-Buford (Parrington 112)

Leny teaches both 3rd and 4th period College Prep class to new students through the process of college search and college, financial aid, and scholarship applications. In class, students learn about different college admission departments, make decisions about college applicants, factors to consider when making decisions about the best college for you, writing effective college essays, applying for financial aid and scholarships, college costs and allowable expenses, pursuing substantial and meaningful volunteer experiences, what scholarship foundations are looking for, steps in notifying students about financial aid award packages, and how to appeal financial aid decisions.
Using newspaper articles and educational journal materials about college search and college, financial aid, and scholarship applications, the class reviews basic writing skills that will assist them in producing effective essays. Writing exercises focus on the six writing traits: ideas and content, word choice, conventions, voice, organization, and sentence fluency.
