Active participation is required of all students.
This class helps students develop research, critical writing, thinking, analytical, and presentation skills. Students research topics, cite sources, and organize the research gathered. The students must also work with revisions, public speaking, and MLA citation formats. Students are pushed to work at a pace to make sure that the deadlines could be met. In class, students mostly do exercises, free-writes, reading, research, group work, discussions, tests, and website work.
Students learn how to do research and use the library database at the UW undergraduate library. They are also learning how to manage deadlines, organize information and lead a team in completing an educational project. Research, summarizing sources, organization, critical thinking, reading, writing, citing sources, copy right guides, time management, leadership skills, collaboration and team work are all the topics covered in this summer.
The purpose of this class is to help student experience the rigors of college academics, demands and deadlines, as well as develop skills in stress management, communication, collaboration and leadership. They also complete an educational project for submission in to a national competition.
Donna's favorite part of the class is seeing students rise to the given occasions and develop their writing, communication and summarizing skills. Also seeing the finished project which may have gone through many transformations over the weeks.
