Living in Seattle has really made me become a very patient person. I learned to wait or accept the rainy weather and turn it into something that is fun and beautiful.
When you think of rain, you think of wet streets and mud puddles, not being able to go outside, and gray cloudy skies. Because I live in Seattle, I have learned to think of rain as music on my roof; to await the colorful rainbow after the sun comes out; and to hear the sound of raindrops hitting the window pain. If you think and listen very closely you can see that there is a beauty in rain.
With the varieties of weather that we have in Seattle, you must get used to the changes very quickly. Sometimes you may have a day when there is sunshine mixed with rain and maybe even hail. But the great thing is that it's fun to see all these climate changes in one day. With the many changes in weather patterns it's hard to be prepared for it, but I try to think of it as an adventure. I never know what to wear when I get up. It could be sunny in the morning and raining in the afternoon.
Patience is something that is very difficult to learn. Because I live here I am able to teach myself how to master this skill and also how to make living here enjoyable. For example, waiting for the bus in the rain can be very frustrating. When you are tired from the long day at school or work, all you want to do is go home and relax on the couch. You certainly do not want to stand on a slippery sidewalk in the rain and wait for the bus to arrive. But again, Seattle has shaped me to not let this bother me. Getting angry or frustrated would only make the matter worse. My solution is to find a protected spot and read a good book that I keep handy and not think about the bus. If you can turn a bad situation into something fun and enjoyable then patience just comes naturally.
As a person who has lived here for a couple of years, I have come to understand this city and learn to adjust to the many differences in the weather of Seattle. I also hope to become a more rounded person as I discover the many opportunities that Seattle has to offer, but in the meanwhile, I've learned to be patient by the rain and waiting for the bus.
