1. UFA General Meeting Scheduled for APS/DPP Meeting in Quebec
// ---------------------------------------------------------------------- //

The annual General Meeting of the UFA will be held during the APS/DPP
meeting in Quebec. It is open to the public.

University Fusion Association General Meeting:
Date: Monday, Oct. 23, 2000
Time: 6:00 pm
Location: Porte Kent room.

Items on the agenda include business issues of the UFA, annoucement of the
election of new officers, and presentations and discussion on the political
aspects of funding for fusion science research. A complete agenda will be
sent out before the meeting.

All UFA members and prospective members from the university research
community are encouraged to attend!

2. Hazeltine Appointed Chair of FESAC
// ---------------------------------------------------------------------- //

Prof. Richard D. Hazeltine, who is Director of the Institute for Fusion
Studies (IFS) at the University of Texas, Austin, succeeds John Sheffield
of Oak Ridge National Laboratory as chairman of the U. S. DOE Fusion Energy
Sciences Advisory Committee (FESAC). Sheffield will remain a member of the
Committee.

The FESAC will have several new members:
Vincent S. Chan (General Atomics)
Jill P. Dahlburg (US Naval Research Laboratory)
Kathryn McCarthy (Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory)
William McCurdy (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory)
George Morales (UCLA).

In addition, James F. Drake (University of Maryland) will join the FESAC as
an ex-officio member in his capacity as Chair of the American Physical
Society Division of Plasma Physics.

Continuing members of FESAC are:
Charles Baker (UCSD)
Gerald Navratil (Columbia University)
Jeffrey Freidberg (MIT),
Joseph Johnson III (Florida A&M University)
John Lindl (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory)
Cynthia Phillips (Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory)

John Sheffield (Oak Ridge National Laboratory)

Ned Sauthoff (ex-officio, representing the IEEE)
Kathryn McCarthy will also serve as representative of the American Nuclear
Society Fusion Energy Division.

The November 14-15 FESAC meeting will be held at the Bethesda Ramada Hotel,
8400 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, Maryland, and is open to the public.

The FESAC is chartered under the Federal Advisory Committee Act (Public Law
92-463) to provide independent advice to the Director of the DOE Office of
Science on scientific and technological issues that arise in the planning,
implementation, and management of the Fusion Energy Sciences program. For

3. Proposals Solicited for Plasma Physics Junior Faculty Development
Program
// ---------------------------------------------------------------------- //

The Office of Fusion Energy Sciences (OFES) of the Office of Science (SC),
U.S. Department of Energy has announced its interest in receiving grant
applications for support under its Plasma Physics Junior Faculty
Development Program. Applications should be from tenure-track faculty
investigators who are currently involved in experimental or theoretical
plasma physics research and should be submitted through a U.S. academic
institution. The purpose of this program is to support the development of
the individual research programs of scientists and engineers early in their
careers.

Applications in response to this notice should be received on or before
February 7, 2001.

4. Notes on OFES briefing on Socio-Economic Studies for Fusion
// ---------------------------------------------------------------------- //

The Office of Fusion Energy Sciences had a briefing on September 7, 2000 on
the results of several small-scale Socio-Economic Studies relating to the

5. Integrated Program Planning Activity Report Finalized
// ---------------------------------------------------------------------- //

The final version of the main report of the Integrated Program Planning
Activity (IPPA) that was submitted to the Office of Fusion Energy Sciences
on behalf of the IPPA Steering Committee and IPPA Working Group is
available for review and comment. This report incorporates the specific
changes recommended as a result of the FESAC review over the last two
months.
