1. Update on Fusion Day 2007
Mark Haynes has recently circulated further information on this
year's Fusion Day (pasted below). He would be particularly grateful
if you let him know, as soon you know, if you will be attending so
that he can make appropriate arrangements. His contact info is:
mark.haynes@ga.com (202) 496-8209
Hope to see quite a few of you there!
(copy below)
Washington Fusion Day will be Thursday, February 15th this year.
Please let us know as soon as possible if you will be attending so
we can begin planning things in more detail.
We will send out a final schedule as we get closer to February 15th,
but here's the preliminary outline of the day:
8:00 a.m. Breakfast at Tortilla Coast Restaurant on Capitol Hill
9:30 a.m. Begin Congressional office visits
About Noon Informal lunch gathering in Longworth Building Cafeteria
About 1:00 p.m. Resume Congressional office visits
Please note that this year, we will not be having an evening
reception. Initial uncertainties about how such events are viewed
and attended given the new ethics and gift rules have led us to err
on the side of caution. However, we will re-examine this again next
year.
SETTING UP VISITS: It is probably not too soon to begin scheduling
your Hill meetings with your Congressional delegation. Listed below
are the Members of the key energy / fusion related House and Senate
Committees. If any of your Members are on these Committees, please
make it a point to meet with their offices. Additionally, please do
not set up meetings with the Committee staffs themselves - - they are
extremely busy now and having numerous people from the fusion
community call for meetings will likely not sit well with them.
In any case, you should not wait much later than about two weeks
ahead of time (around Feb. 2nd) to set up your meetings. If you need
help or advice in this regard, please feel free to call any of us.
Members' phone numbers and other relevant information on Congress
can be found at http://thomas.loc.gov/
CALIFORNIA MEETINGS: As in previous years, the California meetings
will be scheduled by those of us in Washington and we will have a
consolidated schedule for everyone when you arrive. Rest assured
that you will be plenty busy.
HANDOUTS: As usual, we will have a selection of general fusion
material on hand, but you may want to prepare a brief background
piece on your particular research facility to leave with your
Congressional offices. If at all possible, this "leave behind"
should be in layman's language and include some understandable
pictures and/or graphics.
Again, please let us know as soon as you can if you are coming. Thank you!

3. Mini-workshops for NSTX's next 5-year plan
The following information on a planning workshop for NSTX's next
5-year plan was sent to me from M. Ono at PPPL, and may be of
interest to members. Contact information is included.
NSTX is starting to prepare its next Five Year Plan, covering the
time period FY2009-2013. During the month of February 2007, topical
group meetings will be held to discuss physics issues and
experiments, theory and code development and application, and
facility and diagnostic additions or upgrades for this period. We
invite your participation and solicit your input for presentations at
these brainstorming meetings. These ideas could be entirely new, or
extensions of work from the present NSTX five year period.
Mini-workshop schedule:
All sessions will be held at PPPL in room B-318, Lyman Spitzer Building
* Boundary Physics: Feb. 12, 9:00am - 5:00pm, RMaingi@pppl.gov.
* Waves and Energetic Particles: Feb. 13, 9:00am - noon, GTaylor@pppl.gov.
* MHD: Feb. 14, (time to be announced), SSabbagh@pppl.gov.
* Transport and Turbulence, Feb. 15, 1:00pm - 4:00pm, SKaye@pppl.gov.
* Integrated Scenarios: Feb. 20, 1:00pm - 5:00pm, JMenard@pppl.gov.
* Advanced Diagnostics: Feb. 27, 1:00pm - 4:00pm, BStratton@pppl.gov.
In addition, there will be a mini-workshop on "Fusion Energy Sciences
Development using ST" during March-April with details to be
announced, MPeng@pppl.gov.
Please send your ideas for a presentation or any questions to the
respective meeting organizers. Remote participation will be
available for the meetings. For more information, please visit our
