1. Last Update on Fusion Day 2007

Mark Haynes of GA has recently sent around an update on next week's
Fusion Day. Included in his message is a summary of the
administration's request for Fusion Energy Sciences research in FY08
that you'll find to be informative. As always, you can find further
details on the FIRE web site (http://fire.pppl.gov).

>>The President's FY 08 budget recommendations have now been released and it
>>is very important that as many people as possible attend this year's
>>Washington Fusion Day on February 15th. Listed below are those who have
>>said to date that they will attend. If you are coming and are not on this
>>list, please let us know ASAP and conversely, if you are on the list and
>>aren't coming, please let us know ASAP.
>>
>>As stated in a previous e-mail, the day will start off with an 8:00 a.m.
>>breakfast at the Tortilla Coast restaurant just catercorner to the Capitol
>>South Metro stop on Capitol Hill. There will be no evening reception this
>>year. The cost of the breakfast is $20 per person. (Please bring your
>>payment with you and receipts will be provided.)
>>
>>THE FY 08 BUDGET
>>
>>Yesterday the President submitted his FY 2008 budget recommendations to
>>Congress. The budget request for the Department of Energy overall is
>>$24.259 B, a 3% increase over the FY 07 request** of $23.554 B). The FY 08
>>request for the Office of Science is $4.398 B, a 7.2% increase over the FY
>>07 request level of $4.102 B. Within the Science budget is an FES request
>>of $427.85 M, an increase of $108.9 M or 34.1% over the FY 07 request of
>>$318.95. Obviously, this increase in the fusion energy sciences budget is
>>almost completely accounted for by the needed growth in the ITER budget.
>>
>>(**Please note that the FY 07 numbers are merely the request number and not
>>the "real" (and somewhat reduced) numbers which are likely those included in
>>the joint funding resolution for FY 07 currently working their way through
>>Congress.)
>>
>>This substantially increased request for fusion energy sciences research is
>>extremely good news and the result of very hard work on the part of the
>>leadership of the Department of Energy and perhaps most importantly, Ray
>>Orbach. We owe them a great debt of gratitude for their work and their
>>recognition of the importance of this research!
>>
>>It is clear however, from the early Congressional reactions to the
>>President's budget, that the new Congress is going to put it's own stamp on
>>the budget and likely make some very substantial changes in funding
>>priorities. Many of these changes will likely extend into the Department of
>>Energy's recommended budget. Hence, our goal must be to support and hold
>>the President's fusion energy sciences budget and the overall Office of
>>Science budget as Congress goes to work.
>>
>>Therefore, contacting your Members of Congress and participation in
>>Washington Fusion Day is extremely important. The President's budget
>>recommendation is just that: a recommendation. We must all work with
>>Congress to help ensure that it becomes a reality.
>>
>>Please contact any of us if you have any questions.

2. Notice of New Competition for US Base Program Diagnostics

A new Financial Assistance Funding Opportunity has been announced:

"Development of Diagnostic Systems for Magnetic Fusion Energy
Sciences Experiments" (DE-PS02-07ER07-10).

It should be of interest to many UFA members. Details can be found in
the attached slides from a recent presentation by Darlene Markevich of OFES.
