UNIVERSITY FUSION ASSOCIATION

E-mail Newsletter
January 2008
sent by S. Knowlton, UFA President
***************************************************************
Items:
1. FY09 budget
2. UFA ballot and dues collection
3. OFES Theory Solicitation
4. Call for IAEA papers
***************************************************************
1. As of this writing, I do not yet have information on the
President's budget request for OFES in FY09. However, a sidebar news
item in the January 18 issue of Science magazine (entitled "Cheer Up,
Physicists") reports that the Administration is proposing to request
at least $4.7 B for DOE's Office of Science FY09. By comparison, the
2008 request was $4.4B before being trimmed last December to $4 B.
An earlier interview in Science with Ray Orbach on this subject and
impact of the FY08 cuts can be found at
http://sciencenow.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/2008/115/1
This is an appropriate opportunity for me to remind UFA members of
upcoming Congressional Fusion Day on Feb. 21.
2. UFA members should have received by regular mail their ballot for
new executive committee members, and a request for submitting annual
dues. I hope you will send your dues and ballot back to UFA
secretary Michael Brown promptly. If you have not received your
ballot, please e-mail him at doc@swarthmore.edu about this or any
other issues regarding circulation of UFA notices.
3. OFES has posted its 2008 theory solicitation
at http://www.ofes.fusion.doe.gov/solicitations.shtml
and given below.
DE-PS02-08ER08-08,
entitled "Theoretical Research in Magnetic Fusion Energy Science". A
Letter of Intent to submit an application is required and should be
submitted by February 22, 2008. Formal applications are due on April
1, 2008. The program contact is Dr. Curtis Bolton. Submission
details are included in the Financial Assistance Funding Opportunity
document on Grants.gov:

4. Dr. Stephen Eckstrand of OFES is circulating an update on how to
participate in the US paper selection process for the 2008 IAEA
conference. His message is attached to this newsletter.
