Research Seminar

Objectives: The objective of the new research seminar is to provide an additional opportunity to students in the program to receive input on their dissertation research question, approach, and methodology by a larger number of faculty and other student peers. Students will learn how to present their research proposal in a succinct form. Students will also learn how to give feedback and comments on their peers' research. The seminar is designed around the same objectives of the ACSP national PhD workshop that we hosted last summer.

Presenters:  Students who will present will be at different stages in their dissertation work and may have simply a dissertation prospectus or a dissertation proposal or actually a draft chapter. Faculty may also present their ongoing or completed research.

Format: Presentations will be brief (15-20 minutes) focusing on the research questions, relevance to the field, hypotheses, approach and methods. Four panelists invited to comment on the proposed research will comment on the research question and approach. Comments should be limited to 3-4 minutes each. Presenters are given a chance to respond. Following there will be time for open discussion and questions.

Panelists: Four panelists are both faculty and students and can be identified by the presenters or suggested by other students and faculty and can include faculty from the program or other Departments. They can also be indentified among practitioners.

Feedback:Panelists will provide feedback following presentations focusing on the intellectual merit and relevance of the research questions, the feasibility of the research plan, and the research approach and methods proposed. Panelists will be provided with a brief description (draft prospectus) of the research a week in advance.
