1) interactive dynamics between land use and transportation decisions, and the development of integrated modeling tools for policy analysis; 2) emergent properties of complex urban systems; and 3) the social welfare/distributional equity effects of transportation policies---in other words, do transportation policies have the (unintended) consequence of redistributing well-being/wealth/welfare among individuals in an urban system in ways that are particularly equitable or inequitable?

Environmental planning and urban ecology; more specifically, how can socially and politically relevant measures of urban settlement be integrated into environmental studies and what is most appropriate basis of evaluation for the condition of urban natural systems.

Applications of GIS for the investigation of the relationship between urban structure and function and health-related behaviors. A substantial body of knowledge indicates there is a relationship between location and health; exactly how are the properties of urban environments related to such health factors as obesity, inactivity, and fast food onsumption?

I am interested on understanding the relationship between sustainability and urban form. I aim to investigate urban sustainability in the context of the Greater Seattle Area (GSA). I propose to answer the following question: Are there urban forms on the landscape that could be considered sustainable according to a set of indicators that are spatially referenced? Although this study design is exploratory, it is based upon three somewhat loosely defined research hypotheses: 1. Urban sustainability varies at the neighborhood scale across the GSA, 2. There are areas that satisfy sustainability goals to a significant degree both individually and in combination. 3. There are recognizable aspects of urban form shared by the most sustainable areas.
