The following areas of research are currently emphasized in undergraduate and graduate degrees:

  • Physiological and ecological bases of plant performance in urban landscapes
  • Selection and evaluation of landscape plants for optimum performance and minimum use of resources
  • Design and management of large and small-scale amenity landscapes
  • Restoration and management of natural and degraded landscapes
  • Ecology of interaction between native and introduced plant species
  • Classification, indentification, and biogeography of present and potential landscape plants
  • Design, utilization, and management of public gardens; education of both professional and avocational practitioners in urban horticulture
  • Protection against plant pests and pathogens in urban contexts
  • Planning and administration of landscapes along an urban/wildland gradient
  • Biology and management of introduced invasive plants
  • Preservation of rare species, including best management practices
