Professor Kern Ewing leads an UBNA tour.

Plant Trees and Tour UBNA on Washington Weekend

Tour: 9 – 10:30 a.m.
Planting: 9 a.m. – noon

Explore one of Lake Washington's largest remaining wetlands and participate in its ongoing restoration under the guidance of Professor Kern Ewing.

Celebrate Washington Weekend and Arbor Day with the College of Forest Resources (CFR), UW Botanic Gardens, and the CFR Alumni Association for a community tree planting in this unique natural area on the UW Seattle campus. Join us as we help restore the Union Bay Natural Area and increase the tree canopy in the City of Seattle.

The tour, conducted by Professor Kern Ewing, will walk Wahkiakum Lane and explore some of the restoration sites that have been completed since 1990. Discuss the site’s history and ecology, the philosophy behind its restoration, and the plants growing there today.

For either activity, meet in the northeast corner of Lot E-5. For directions, visit the Washington Weekend website.

Spring and Summer Classes at UW Botanic Gardens

Learn to garden in small spaces, tour the Union Bay Natural Area, and brush up your artistic skills this spring. Whatever your interests, UW Botanic Gardens has a program for you! Upcoming classes include:

Botanical Illustration: Watercolor

Let spring's colors inspire you this season. Learn watercolor wash, wet-on-wet, and dry brush techniques, as well as basic drawing concepts.

Botanical Drawing: Special Projects

Work on longer, more complex projects. Render botanical subjects in pencil, using line and shading to create accurate, beautiful finished portraits. The class will cover reference photos, and students will receive a CD filled with images of their subject to use.

Plant ID at the Arboretum

Spend a morning at the Arboretum, learning how to integrate 20 great plants into your garden for the late spring season.

Click here for a full list of classes and events from May through August. To register, contact Jean Robins at 206-685-2590.
