Come learn about one of the Arboretum's unique and little-known collections!

Tour the Arboretum's Nothofagus collection, the largest in North America. Found in Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, and southern South America, these southern beeches are the only southern genus in the oak family, Fagaceae.

Janine is co-owner of Anderson-LeLievre Landscape Design and has been an Arboretum guide since 1997. Her "Sommarstuga" display garden received multiple awards at the 2008 Northwest Flower and Garden Show.

Join Head of Restoration Kern Ewing on a tour of this former landfill. After 30 years of ongoing restoration, the Union Bay Natural Area is one of the city's premier bird and wildlife habitats. It's a fantastic spot to walk and one of the best places to see restoration in action.

Come wander its trail, enjoy the views of Lake Washington, and learn what this extraordinary environment has to offer!

Shawna Hartung leads yoga classes in the ArboretumYoga in the Arboretum - take one class or come for the series

Wednesdays, 6 - 8 p.m. July 23, 30; August 6, 13

$55 for the series, or $15 per class; pre-registration required

Join Education Supervisor and Certified Hatha Yoga Instructor, Shawna Hartung, for a unique yoga journey through the Arboretum.  In this 6-week series discover beauty and peace amongst the trees through an inspirational yoga practice.  Class will meet at the Graham Visitors Center followed by a meditative walk to different wooded areas of the Arboretum including Foster Island, Crab Apple Meadow, Loderi Valley and a Giant Sequoia Grove. This class is designed for beginning to intermediate yoga students. Please bring a yoga mat, water bottle and block. Class will be held outdoors.

For years, volunteer Larry Howard has used his camera to capture the spectacular and the subtle at the Center for Urban Horticulture. Come find vistas and views you've never seen during his photo exhibit at the Miller Library. All are welcome to attend the reception or explore his work on your own. Library hours are as follows:

Monday, 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Tuesday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Saturday, 9:00 a.m. - 3 p.m. (closed Saturdays in July & August)
Closed Sundays

We are pleased to extend an invitation from the Northwest Horticultural Society and Ciscoe Morris for brunch. Proceeds benefit the NHS endowment fund for the library.

Ciscoe will host two groups of 20 people for brunch and a tour of his garden. Tickets are $85 per person. Please contact Karin Kravitz or 206-780-8172 for reservations.

 

 

 


Eryngium Sapphire BlueJuly Plant Highlight: Eryngium 'Sapphire Blue'

One of the most outstanding sea hollies ever introduced to the Northwest. Flowers prolifically in full blazing sun and dryish conditions once established, making it drought tolerant and relatively carefree. The seedheads maintain their shape and are an exceptional cut flower for arrangements, fresh or dried. Plant in full sun and well-drained soil.

Spread: 2ft.
Bloom Time: June/July
Bloom Color: Silver, later steely grey blue
Sun: Full Sun
Water: Medium- low moisture, well drained soil
