UW Botanic Gardens Open House:

Wednesday, April 25, 3:00-7:00 pm
Center for Urban Horticulture

What's happening at the Botanic Gardens these days? Come to our Open House and find out! The public is invited to drop by anytime between 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm to sample free mini-programs and tours and peek behind the scenes. Find out where the Arboretum's plants come from, see how Herbarium specimens are made, learn about cutting-edge ecological restoration and research in the Union Bay Natural Area, and more. Don't forget to bring the little ones; children's activities will include a pollination game, viewing plants through mini-microscopes, and story time in the Miller Library.

Check our events webpage after April 9th for a full schedule of events at the Open House.

Plant Highlight: Cornus mas...
Early Spring Sunshine

This time of year, tiny yellow flowers cover the bare branches of Cornus mas, making this little Dogwood tree sparkle! By late summer, bright red fruits develop that resemble cherries; thus the common name, Cornelian Cherry. Wildlife enjoys the fruit, and humans do too, usually in the form of jam since they're quite sour. This is a perfect choice for the urban garden because it's small and easy to grow. Come stroll through a grove of Cornus mas at Union Bay Gardens.

Dispatch from the Blue Tubes!

If you've walked through the Union Bay Natural Area lately, you may have noticed a new patch of "blue tubes". These tubes mark the latest in the restoration efforts in the Union Bay Natural Area, a 74-acre site just northeast of Husky Stadium, and one of the best wildlife areas in town.

The "blue tubes" are protective shields around young trees recently planted by 32 students in ESRM 473 Restoration Ecology class, taught by Professor Kern Ewing. Students in this class got on-the-ground experience in restoration through planting more than 400 trees on this site as part of their class work.
