Large remnants of South Puget Sound prairies persist on Fort Lewis, an active military training installation located between Tacoma and Olympia, Washington. A large artillery impact area burns frequently and sees little human disturbance; two factors which aid in it being considered the highest quality prairie in the region. The area is free of most locally invasive species. In spring of 2006, a large population of
Potentilla recta (sulfur cinquefoil) was discovered and subsequently treated using backpack sprayers. A 3% foliar spray solution of 2-4-D ester did not control the species. A 2.5% foliar spray solution of triclopyr (Garlon 3A) proved to be an effective control technique.
